Search – What data needs to be captured?

We have seen search input boxes on almost all the websites. It is an important factor for any website or an app. We need to analyze the data that the user is searching using the search input box.

The type of data we can capture for search terms

  1. What are user searching for on your website?
  2. Are users clicking on the search result?
  3. Is the search result showing relevant data or not?
  4. How many search results are converted into purchase?
  5. What pages do users  visit after searching for the product?
  6. What products users are adding into the cart after performing the search action?
  7. Where do users drop-off in the checkout process from the search product to add to the cart?
  8. User is a logged in user or an anonymous user?
  9. If users are logged in users, can you collect data associated with their account?
  10. How often a specific product is viewed by the user?
  11. Did customers raise any query about the searched product?
  12. Is he looking for any discount for that searched product after adding the product to the cart?
  13. Where are users coming from ?
  14. Track user interaction with chatbot or live chat for searched products.
  15. What payment method customers are using?
  16. What is the successful and unsuccessful rate of payment methods?
  17. Track login attempt and user activity
  18. Map and analyze the complete user journey once the user searches the product. From searching the product to add to cart. Analyze the full activity.
  19. If it is a mobile app , analyze the entire flow for the mobile app.

To capture data, you can use a web analytical tool, CRM System or any other data analysis software. As a product designer and Product Manager, we need to analyze the data and find some insights.

  • Capture data and find insights from the data.
  • Discuss those insights with stakeholders.
  • Work on wireframes and prototypes .
  • Do the testing with the prototypes.
  • Do A/ B testing with existing and new flows.
  • Prepare the design and assets according  to the design system.
  • Maintain consistency
  • Coordinate with engineering team to implement the design
  • Do the Beta testing
  • Do the usability testing
  • Launch
